From secretary to vice president: Harriet Barker
From secretary to vice president: Harriet Barker

In 1960, Harriet Barker applied for the position of secretary to Walter Orr Roberts, the new UCAR president and NCAR director. She became NCARís third employee (and the first one not transferred from the High Altitude Observatory). Barker rose through the ranks over the next several decades, becoming director of Budget and Planning in 1978, an unusual enough job at the time for a woman to merit a feature story in the local newspaper. In 1987, she passed another milestone when she became vice president for corporate affairs, overseeing trustee and member activities, university relations, new educational efforts, and public information.
