Atmospheric science in the news

During the 1980s, Steve Schneider emerged as one of the key scientific spokespeople on the issue of greenhouse gases and climate change. The head of an NCAR group taking a holistic view of the climate system, Schneider was frequently interviewed by newspaper and television reporters. He was also an occasional guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, discussing weather and climate. His ability to clearly communicate scientific ideas—and his ideas themselves—continue to make Schneider one of the most quoted scientists in the field. Here he is interviewed by NBC News following the explosion of Mount St. Helens in May 1980.
