Pilgrimage to the birthplace of El Niño

In 1992–¬93, UCAR coordinated logistics for 100 institutions taking part in the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere program’s Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE). Among the largest atmospheric studies ever conducted, TOGA COARE was trained on the western tropical Pacific “warm pool,” the birthplace of El Niño. Data from this massive international field program are still being analyzed today.
