Pollution and Megacities

Pollution in “megacities” (those with more than 10 million residents) was the focus of the 2006 field program MIRAGE, Megacity Impacts on Regional and Global Environments. Scientists were particularly interested in how plumes of pollution spread and how components interact as they age. The broader goal was to assess the impact of pollution on regional and global air quality, climate, and ecosystems. A follow-on MIRAGE campaign is taking place in May 2010 in Shanghai, China.
