Instant data

In 2004, for the first time, researchers and students received nearly instant access over the Internet to the same high-resolution radar data used by National Weather Service forecasters. UCARís Unidata program transmitted the data, known as NEXRAD Level II, including the higher-elevation scans needed to fully profile intense thunderstorms. With Unidataís Integrated Data Viewer, researchers can pool the radar observations with satellite imagery, balloon soundings, model analyses and forecasts, and other datasets. The results can be sliced, diced, and probed in myriad ways.
